The Newbury School of Weaving is excited to host guest instructor Gregorio Ruiz, a master dyer and weaver from Teotitlán del Valle in Oaxaca, for a 1-day natural dyeing workshop.
Students will learn about the benefits of natural dyes and fibers, and follow the process of dyeing with natural materials found in Teotitlán del Valle to create their own hand-dyed organic cotton tee shirt. Instruction will include mordanting, dyeing, and drying/fixing dyed fibers, as well as the importance of natural dyeing in the Oaxacan region and additional demonstrations.
Dyes sources discussed in this workshop:
– Grana cochinilla (cochineal)
– Cempasúchil (marigold)
– Añil (indigo-bearing plants)
– Nogal (walnuts)
This workshop will be presented in both Spanish and English in collaboration with Prophecy Chocolate in Morrisville, Vermont.
Materials will be billed separately at the workshop. Skeins of undyed wool yarn will be available for purchase for additional dyeing opportunities.
