You’ve mastered growing your own vegetables, canning, and making sourdough. What’s a DIYer got left to do? Make your own clothes, obviously.
This class is broken up over two weeks:
Week one—Students will weave, finish, and wash solid, striped, or checked shirting cloth in cotton, linen, or worsted yarn.
Week two—Students will cut and sew their cloth into a shirt. We will provide contemporary button down shirt patterns, 18th–19th century shirt cutting directions, or students may provide their own pre-tested patterns (no one wants to determine fit using handwoven cloth, trust us).
A combination of machine and hand sewing techniques will be taught that take advantage of the strengths of each. Sewing machines will be available for use, but students are encouraged to bring their own when possible. A limited selection of buttons and notions will be available for purchase, or students may provide their own.
Materials, including weaving yarn and sewing notions, will be billed as used.
Prerequisite: Foundations or prior weaving experience at the Newbury School of Weaving (or our previous location in Marshfield), and basic sewing skills (straight seams on a machine, very basic hand sewing).
